Arsenal hammered newly promoted side Southampton for a second successive win. It was a game that the Gunners totally dominated from the first minute to last. Southampton scored two own goals, Gervinho scored a brace as he played a rather unlikely position, centre forward and Lukas Podolski and Walcott got themselves on the scoresheet as well. Arsenal were denied a fourth successive clean sheet after Szczesny’s mistake, otherwise it was a perfect day for Arsenal and fans. Arsenal now sit third, two points behind leaders Chelsea and one point behind second placed ManUtd.
Here are the ratings of the Gunners in their thumping win:
Szczesny 5- Had a poor game. Was indecisive in his clearances and his mistake led to the goal. His performance drop might give Mannone a nod ahead of him. He has certainly got to improve.
Gibbs 8- He was brilliant throughout. His two crosses led to own goals and he rather found himself on the left wing than left back. Combined well with the midfield.
Vermaelen 7- Solid throughout. Kept Rickie Lambert quite. His shot led to the last goal.
Mertesacker 7- The big German is certainly keeping Koscielny out and his performance will again mean that Laurent would be sitting on the bench against ManCity. Was solid defensively and was unlucky not to score.
Jenkinson 7- Didn’t have any problems either and was solid defensively. Did add some extra in attack.
Coquelin 7- Replaced Diaby in midfield and had a good game. Won the ball quite a few times and kept the game simple.
Arteta 7.5- Was instrumental in midfield once again, dominating and spreading the play nicely.
Cazorla 8- The little Spaniard was the architect of every Arsenal attack. He didn’t get any assists but he was the creator of everything.
Chamberlain 7- He was just sensational down that right hand side, showing off his pace and skills. He came close scoring against his former club.
Podolski 8.5- Everyone expected him to play down through the middle after Giroud was left out but he again played on the left flank and combined exceptionally with Cazorla. Scored a sublime free kick on the half hour mark. He drops back in the midfield and the rotation was just brilliant.
Gervinho 9- Got a brace for himself which will certainly do his confidence some good. His pace and trickery was too good for the Southampton centre backs.
It is a fantastic win early on the season which will hopefully result in a good run and make sure that Arsenal get three points against ManCity and Chelsea.
