It has been a good week so far for the Gunners.
The team training on Monday ahead of the Champions League Opener ended with the news that first-choice Goal Keeper Wojciech Szczesny would not travel to France due to ankle trouble. We have now heard from Arsene Wenger that Szczesny will be out for 2-3 weeks.
That gave Vito Mannone another chance to prove the manager that he is good enough to be Arsenal’s No.1 for a long time. And he says Wenger now trusts him.
The boss knows that I have the kind of experience now to play and I think I have shown it in the three games I have played.
The Montpellier game was a game of two halves. Domination in the first half despite a clumsy bit of work by the Captain was quickly turned around by the forwards. The second half saw tired legs and a spirited effort from the home team. But Arsenal managed to defend the French champions out of the game. A good start in the showpiece European Competition.
Do you know? Arsenal have NEVER lost a game in which Vito Mannone has started. Let us hope the record continues tomorrow.
The biggest news of the week has to be the return to training of Jack Wilshere. But before you start questioning his availability to the team’s games, he has just returned from a 14-month break and Arsene Wenger has assured that he will get to play a number of reserve team games before making his Arsenal debut in the No.10 shirt. Patience.
Also returning to first team training was Emmanuel Frimpong and again it will take some time for him to settle down. But the return of the two means that the midfield, which has been wonderful so far, will be bolstered by their presence. Ahem, who is Yann M’vila?!
Young midfielder Conor Henderson has joined our Capital One Cup opponent League One side Coventry City on loan for three months. Of course, he won’t be eligible to play against Arsenal but this three months should improve him as a player. Arsenal India Supporters wishes Henderson a great time at Coventry City.
Arsenal lost to West Ham United 1-4 in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, erstwhile known as the reserve league. This was the first defeat this season and after 5 games, Arsenal have won three and drew the fourth. With players like Hector Bellerin, Thomas Eisfeld, Jon Toral, Sanchez Watt and James Shea (who incidentally traveled with the Arsenal side to France) the team under Terry Burton looks promising. Future stars.
Back to Premier League business. Arsenal go to the Etihad Stadium tomorrow to play the defending champions in what will be the first real test for the team in England. Despite the loss against Real Madrid, Manchester City will take this game differently and Arsene has already stressed the importance of avoiding any complacency.
As for as the team news is concerned, there won’t be any change in the squad that took on Montpellier. There could be a change in the starting eleven but the eighteen remains the same unless there is a eleventh hour injury. This could mean another bench appearance for Laurent Koscielny as the highly impressive Per Mertesacker continues to start. Healthy competition that. The Champions will have Sergio Aguero back up front and it will be a good test for the back four.
So, it has been a good week for Arsenal and hopefully we can end the week by beating the title holders. What can go wrong? After all we have Vito Mannone guarding the goal post.
How many remember the commentary from the last time we played City. “Artetaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa“. Have a good time Gooners.
Until next time.
