Rating the Gunners in their win over the French champions

Arsenal had a nervy encounter with Montpellier on Tuesday. It was a nervy win over them with Montpellier opening the scoring from the spot after Vermaelen fouled the striker in the box. Arsenal responded brilliantly with two goals in two minutes via the men in form Podolski and Gervinho. In the second half, there was a flood of Montpellier attacks which Arsenal defended magnificently and held on to win 2-1 at the Stade de la Mosson. Here are the player ratings from the match.

Mannone 7- Had his third appearance of the season but was denied a clean sheet this time after being embarrassed from the spot by a beautiful chip penalty by Younes Belhanda. Did well the rest of the game with making a couple of great saves to deny Montpellier a point.

Gibbs 6.5- Was alright defensively and offensively. Faced a tricky winger and did quite well but he was caught up sometimes.

Vermaelen 6- His tackle early on resulted in a penalty which meant that Arsenal would have to come from behind for the first time in the season. Was solid otherwise.

Mertesacker 7- Made some good and important tackles, interceptions and clearances during the second half to deny Montpellier a second goal.

Jenkinson 7- Showed great desire to go forward and did to provide a wonderful assist to Gervinho for Arsenal’s second. It was a beautifully picked out ball to the Ivorian. Had a tough opponent to fact in the form of Mounier but did quite well.

Arteta 7- Was focal to the attacks and defending again. Was solid and disciplined throughout.

Diaby 6- Picked up a yellow 20 seconds into the match and was a bit shaky and indecisive in his clearances. One of them may as well resulted in a second goal for the French champions.

Cazorla 6.5- Was instrumental as usual, starting all the attacks. Had to do a bit of the defensive work as well.

Gervinho 7.5- Played on the right side this time and did well to get his third goal in two games. He is making the difference in the last two matches. I’m sure he will keep his place in the starting line up if his goalscoring form continues.

Podolski 8- Scored his third goal in three matches. It was brilliantly finished. He is is going to vital and hopefully prolific this season.

Giroud 7- Still hasn’t opened his account but did quite well against his former club. Just had one chance that to was a difficult one on the volley. I am sure he will soon find the back of the net if he keeps playing like this.

It was a good day for Gunners as they remain unbeaten in the season up till now. Next match against ManCity at the Etihad which would be Arsenal’s first major test.
