Arsenal travel to the St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday to play their first match of the year 2013. This would be the second meeting between these two sides this season in the Premier League. Arsenal are on a good run with four wins from four and go to Southampton on the back of a 7-3 thrashing of Newcastle whereas Southampton come with a point from the Britannia.
When these two teams met at the Emirates earlier in the season, Arsenal came out with a convincing 6-1 win. It was another enjoyable day at the Emirates like the one on Saturday against Newcastle. Arsenal sit fifth in the league heading into the match with a match in hand. Tottenham and Chelsea are in fourth and third place respectively. On the other hand, Southampton are 18th in the league with a game in hand as well.
Possible starting XI
Szczesny would be between the sticks for this one as well. The Polish international has been sharp since his return from injury and has shown great signs.
The back four would be same with Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen and Gibbs until and unless Mertesacker returns from illness. Arsenal’s back four has been good recently with having one of the best defences in the league this season.
The midfield would consist of Arteta, Wilshere and Cazorla. Those three are starting to play brilliantly and have been dominating in every match. They have been key to Gunners’ success in the last few matches.
In attack, Arsène Wenger will have a problem as he would have four people to chose from – Walcott, Podolski, Chamberlain and Giroud – as all of them scored in the 7-3 demolition of Newcastle. Though Walcott has started through the middle in the last three matches but it will be interesting to see who will start on the first of January at the St Mary’s.
Arsenal definitely need the three points and a win on the New Year’s Day might just set the tone for the whole year.
