Arsenal managed to end their winless run with a 2-0 win against a West Brom side who have surprised many top teams this season and sat in fifth, five points ahead of the Gunners prior to this match. The gap was reduced to two points after the Gunners scored twice from the spot to win a match they dominated from the first minute to last. Arsenal played some beautiful football and created many chances.
The first goal came after Santi Cazorla went down too easily in the box, probably a dive, and fellow Spaniard Mikel Arteta converted from the spot. The second one was another controversial goal as Chamberlain pushed Popov, looked like a foul but the referee allowed to play on and then the Englishman was fouled in the box, resulting in another penalty and another goal to double Arsenal’s advantage. The West Brom fans were furious but a little bit of luck and quality gave Gunners the three points they needed badly in this very important game at the Emirates.
Here are the ratings from the match:
Szczesny 8- Didn’t really have anything to do but save a long shot. The Pole was alert despite very less action and added a clean sheet to his tally. He was reliable in between the sticks.
Sagna 6.5- Was well covered at the back but some of his crosses weren’t the best. Played on despite being injured.
Mertesacker 8- Stood strong at the back and read the game well. Dealt with the long balls brilliantly.
Vermaelen 7.5- He looks to be returning back to his proper form and had a good performance at the back. Kept Shane Long quite all the game and made some key interceptions and tackles.
Gibbs 7.5- Provided extra width going forward and kept Odemwingie out of action for the whole match.
Arteta 7.5- Passing was brilliant as usual and converted the two penalties well. Won the mind battles against Myhil both times and shot both penalties down the middle.
Wilshere 8.5- (Man of the Match) the young England international was exceptional on Saturday and looked to be very close to his very best form. Had a golden chance to score early on but his little 4 or 5 yard bursts from midfield caused the West Brom defence many problems.
Cazorla 7.5- His pressing was good throughout the game and was sharp in his passing. The only negative was the dive. Hopefully, Arsène Wenger will sort it out.
Chamberlain 7.5- His best performance this season so far. An electrifying performance from him causing the full back Popov many problems. Won the second penalty for Arsenal’s second goal.
Gervinho 7.5- Created many chances and got to the end of many. Has to improve his finishing and needs to keep a cool head when he takes them. Could have scored four or five against West Bromwich Albion.
Giroud 7.5- Led the line well and was involved in the link up play. Didn’t really get clear cut chances to score.
A good performance which will hopefully start a new winning run.
