The transfer window, for most fans, brings that extra bit of excitement just when things are getting tough. A team may have just missed out on promotion or Europe and the summer months is a time to build the squad again for another push.
In the past decade, we’ve seen eye-watering sums of money being quoted as players move around the globe to ply their trade in the greatest game of all. Of course, it isn’t all plain sailing, and some teams go year after year without really dipping into the so-called “war chest”.
In recent years, Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has, for one reason or another, not been able to splash the cash. The club has been run on a budget and, unlike its rivals, makes money each year.
But after another failed season without a trophy, this summer promised a lot more. There were murmurs in the live football commentary that Wenger was going to make his move – and what better time than now with the rest of the top four changing managers?
But here we are in August and nothing has changed. Rooney, Suarez, Higuain, and Fellaini have all been mentioned by football betting pundits and yet still Arsenal have yet to add anybody notable to their squad.
There’s plenty of talent already at the club but Wenger has to act quickly before it is too late. Chelsea and City have spent millions and added some real firepower to their squad.
The attraction of fast-flowing football and Champions League will attract some big players but, for once, Arsenal have to meet the demands of the biggest stars. It speaks volumes that, even with a weakened squad, the Gunners can reach Europe year in year out. Imagine what they could do with some investment?
