Player Ratings of the 2-0 win against Montpellier

Two second half goals from Wilshere and Podolski ensured that Arsenal will qualify once again for the knockout stages. It was a dull and sloppy first half but a brilliant second half performance sent the Gunners through the knockout phase.

Here are the ratings from the match:

Szczesny 6.5- Didn’t have much to do but what he had to, he did quite well. A clean sheet always boosts the confidence of a goalkeeper.

Sagna 7- Another solid display from the French right back as he didn’t let anyone past him and his crosses were brilliant.

Mertesacker 7- Good performance by him and nearly scored his second in two games after nice skill on the edge of Montpellier’s box.

Koscielny 7.5- The Frenchman was solid at the back and his bursts in the middle of the game led to some very good chances. He added the extra spark in the attack in the first half. Was unlucky not to score when his brilliant effort hit the bar.

Vermaelen 7- He played like a proper fullback. He surged forward and defended well. He combined well with Podolski and his crossing was too good. Example, one of them led to Koscielny’s header and another one led to Wilshere’s goal.

Arteta 6.5- Ran the midfield but was man marked throughout the game.

Wilshere 7- Sloppy in the first half but excellent in the second. Scored his first goal in almost 2 years and had an electric performance in the second half.

Cazorla 7- Was lively throughout the game, trying to tear apart the Montpellier defence.

Chamberlain 6- Not a brilliant performance by him as he was rather anonymous throughout.

Podolski 8- The German had a brilliant game down the left side. Firstly, he wasn’t substituted probably for the first time this season. Scored a sublime volley after exchanging passes with Olivier Giroud. Podolski helped in defence and had some half chances as well. The former Clogne man has got seven goals in all competitions now for the Gunners.

Giroud 7.5- A strong display by the former Montpellier striker which just lacked a goal. The Frenchman got two assists and was again important in Arsenal’s win. Both the assists were well worked. The first one was a knockdown for Wilshere from Vermaelen’s cross. The second one was a good one two with Podolski and a first time ball led to his goal. Giroud has now got seven goals and seven assists from 12 starts. He will bring goals for Arsenal this season.

A good performance and next target should be to finish top of the group.
Next match vs Aston Villa (away) 5:30pm GMT.

  1. Giroud was arsenals man of the match, ok he didn’t get a goal but his hold up play and work rate was outstanding. He set up up both of the goals and his over the top ball to podolski was world class. He deserves 8+
