It was an incredible night for Arsenal as they managed to one back from a 4 goal deficit to win 7-5 at the Madejski Stadium in the fourth round of he CapitalOne Cup. The Gunners were 4-0 down 40 minutes into the match but manage to restore some pride when Walcott make it 4-1 at half time. Arsenal then managed to make it 4-4 with the last kick of the game with goals from Giroud, Koscielny and Walcott. In extra time, Chamakh scored his first goal to make it 5-4 but The Royals soon equalised via Pogrebnyak to make it 5-5. All wasn’t over when Theo Walcott completed his hat trick and Chamakh had time to score another seal a win which surely will be written down in the League Cup’s most amazing matches.
Here are the ratings:-
Martinez 6- He couldn’t have had a worse game than that. The young Argentine conceded five goals, four of which were scored in the first half. The third goal was surely his mistake as he was not able to palm it away and the other goals were partly his fault. A couple of frat saves towards the end saved Arsenal and made up for the other five.
Jenkinson 6- Didn’t have the best of his games. Didn’t look at his best when it came to defending but did manage to score (well the goal was afterwards given to Walcott) to keep Arsenal in the game and go to extra time. Did work quite hard, coming in and put dangerous balls in from the right.
Djourou 5.5- Jason Roberts gave him all sorts of problems and the Swiss international was just tired at the end.
Koscielny 6- Scored an own goal and could be blamed for the others but scored at the other end on the 89th minute and made it 4-3 to keep Arsenal’s hopes alive. Was also outmuscled by Roberts easily and in short, this was one of his worst games ever.
Miquel 5.5- I am not sure if he is a natural full back as he lacked the pace and was beaten far too easily. He is brilliant as a centre back where he stands strong and firm and makes important tackles and interceptions.
Frimpong 5- First game after return from injury and the young Ghanian international hardly influenced the game whatsoever. Was subbed off rightly.
Coquelin 7- Couldn’t really pull the strings in midfield in the first half but was very influential in the second providing key passes.
Arshavin 7- Was allowed to play in his favoured position – behind the striker – and did quite well in the second half providing many assists (I think four) and was key to Arsenal’s success in the game.
Gnabry 6.5- Didn’t really get into the game but when started to really threaten, was subbed off. Looked sharp.
Walcott 8.5- Surely the man of the match, scoring and assisting on three occasions. Was the major threat and terrorised the Reading defence with his electric pace. Since Gervinho is out due to injury, he will finally get his chance and probably will start on Saturday in the big match against ManUnited.
Chamakh 7.5- Took 90 minutes to warm up and then scored a brace, both were excellent goals. His first one was a low and hard shot in the bottom corner to give Gunners the lead. His second was a good calculated lob finish.
Giroud 8- Definitely changed the game. Scored a brilliant header with two minutes to go. The goal just showed his class and why he was top scorer last season in the French league 1. Tested the goalkeeper on many occasions and brought the needed energy to Arsenal’s attack. Was just brilliant.
Eisfield 7- The young German came on for Gnabry in the second half and did quite well. He picked out the strikers with some key passes and kept Arsenal moving.
Meade 6.5- Came on when Miquel got injured. He is naturally a left winger but did quite well as a cover.
It was a good result which send the Gunners into the quarter finals and maybe Arsenal could try their luck in this competition to end their trophy drought.
