Rating the Gunners in the Anfield Win

Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla opened their accounts for Arsenal as the Gunners beat Liverpool at Anfield. It was a match where Liverpool dominated a bit more than the Gunners, having 53% of possession. Arsenal won their first Premier League match for the campaign and now have five points from three matches whereas things got worse for Liverpool under the Brendon Rodger revolution. You can see the Steve Bould influence as Arsenal managed to keep a third clean sheet on the trot.

Here are the player ratings from the match:

Mannone 6- Had his second league appearance after Szczesny was said to be unfit to play. Didn’t have to do much the whole match but when called in action, did some good saves to continue Arsenal’s clean sheet record.

Jenkinson 6- Had a good game against young Raheem Sterling down that right hand side. Did face some problems but had his share of good tackles and interceptions.

Mertesacker 7- Was chosen ahead of Koscielny and did well against Suarez. Was cautioned early on in the match but was solid throughout the game. Has adapted more to the physical Premier League and with performances like this, he can surely keep out Koscielny from the Arsenal XI.

Vermaelen 7- Did a captain’s job with some important tackles, blocks and interceptions. Is forming a good partnership with the big German in the early stages of the campaign.

Gibbs 7- He has been having good games down his left flank and was good again at Anfield. He kept Boroni out of the game and was quick on counter attacks. Was more adventurous going forward but was caught up front. Was lucky to have Podolski down that left side who was always present there for the cover.

Arteta 8- Was fantastic throughout the game. Started the Arsenal attacks and was disciplined. Gave Cazorla and Diaby the freedom to play their game ahead of him.

Diaby 9- Man of the match performance from the Frenchman. He was all over the pitch. Arsène Wenger has a lot of faith in him and his performance would surely have silenced many critics. His performance reminded the Gunners of Viera. His physical presence, skills and tackling makes him a complete midfielder and looks like a new signing. If he remains fit this season he can surely be a regular starter and help Arsenal to a great season.

Cazorla 8- Another electrifying performance by the Spaniard and this time he opened his account with a low and fierce shot which Pepe Reina was unable to stop. Got an assist to himself as well.

Chamberlain 6- He was rather quiet the whole game after getting subbed of for Ramsey. It’s fair to say that he hasn’t recovered from the injury. It was a surprise when he was listed in the starting eleven but didn’t really make a huge impact.

Podolski 8- The German scored his and Arsenal’s first goal of the campaign with a neat and tidy finish past Reina. He got an assist for him as well. He did his defensive duties well, providing a cover for Gibbs and not letting Glen Johnson having any impact on the game.

Giroud 7- Missed two great chances, one a déjà vu but this time on his left foot. He set up many chances for his fellow team-mates and shows signs of adapting to the Premier League life. He shows signs of scoring and would get among the goal scorers soon.

Arsenal won their first game and this surely might be a start of a good run.
