Arsenal’s preseason finally kicks off on Saturday. Arsenal finished third last season after a horrific start to the campaign. This match would surely make the fans cheer up after their long wait. Fans would be finally able to see Arsenal play and would want to see the new signings Podolski and Giroud play.
Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup now in its second year, will see the Gunners join hosts Southampton and the Belgian side (Anderlecht) for a round-robin tournament of three 45-minute games on July 14.
Southampton – newly promoted to the Premier League – kick things off against Anderlecht at 5.15pm.
The opening match will be followed by a procession of the Olympic torch around the stadium, before the Gunners face Anderlecht at 6.45pm.
Arsenal will then play the Saints at 8pm to bring the competition to a
Arsène Wenger has named a young squad for the matches at St Mary’s, although the likes of Gervinho,Johan Djourou, Marouane Chamakh, Andre Santos, Francis Coquelin and Kieran Gibbs are all included in the 23-man squad.
None of the Club’s players who featured at Euro 2012 are in the travelling party as they are yet to return to training.
But those Arsenal fans attending the tournament will have the opportunity to see Kyle Bartley, Vito Mannone and Henri Lansbury back in Arsenal colours again after successful loan spells at Rangers, Hull City and West Ham respectively last season.
There is also the chance to see some of the Club’s rising stars in action, such as Dutch midfielder Kyle Ebecilio, exciting Swedish teenager Kristoffer Olsson and German star Thomas Eisfeld.
The best things about these friendlies has always been the unlimited substitutes but I don’t think Wenger would sub anyone in a 45 minute game.
Arsenal should easily win these two games and I hope we see lots of goals and brilliant play from the Gunners.
