Top 10 Arsenal Transfer Rumours

The January transfer window has opened its doors to clubs to strengthen their squads, in time for the business end of the season. And, as usual the Gunners have been linked to a gazillion players, again! You may remember some of Wenger’s top January signings namely Walcott, Diaby, Adebayor, Arshavin etc etc.

Here are the top 10 players linked to a move to the Gunners, this time around.

10) Marco Reus

(Current Club – Borussia Monchengladbach, Age – 22, Position – Attacking Midfielder, Nationality – German)

One among the latest crop of talented young German footballers to come through, Marco Reus has seen a rapid rise to stardom. After signing for Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, the attacking midfielder has 36 goals to his name. However, on 4th January 2012, he signed a pre-contract agreement worth £14.5 million, with Borussia Dortmund, which will see him join them at the end of the season. If signed for Arsenal, it could mean the possible end of tenures of Tomas Rosicky/Andrei Arshavin.

Possibility of joining – Minimal

9) Wayne Bridge

(Current Club – Manchester City, Age – 31, Position – Left Back, Nationality – English)

Touted as a possible loan signing, owing to the injuries sustained to Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs, Wayne Bridge brings with him wealth of experience. Recently accused by Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, of doing nothing but pick up his £90,000 every week, Bridge defended himself by saying he never got the chance, falling down the pecking order to Clichy and Kolarov. Would be a good cover at left-back, but is short of match fitness, as he hasn’t played a single league game this season.

8 ) Aly Cissokho

(Current Club – Lyon, Age – 24, Position – Left Back, Nationality – French)

Subject of a transfer involving his former club Porto, AC Milan and his current club Lyon, Cissokho has been a consistent performer for the French club, despite their disappointing recent Ligue 1 campaigns. Cissokho, if signed could fill up the problematic left-back spot.

Possibility of joining – Minimal

7) Yoann Gourcuff

(Current Club – Lyon, Age – 25, Position – Attacking Midfield, Nationality – French)

The highly talented French midfielder has been a long-term target for Arsenal, as well as other top clubs over Europe. He has drawn comparisons with footballing greats and compatriots Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane for his style of play. A major influence in Bordeaux’s title triumph in 2008-2009, he never hit the heights in Italy, the previous season, with AC Milan. Another personally rewarding 2009-2010 season followed, after which Lyon acquired his services for a reported £18 million. Had a moderate first season at the club.

Possibility of joining – Minimal

6) Eden Hazard

(Current Club – Lille, Age – 21, Position – Attacking Midfielder/Winger, Nationality – Belgian)

Another long-term transfer target, Eden Hazard is a highly regarded player all over Europe. All of 21, he is pacy, and has a eye for not only killer passes, but also for goals. Enjoyed a highly successful 2010/2011 season with Lille, where the club won its first title in 56 years. Would add an extra dimension to an already talented midfield.

Possibility of joining – Average

5) Salomon Kalou

(Current Club – Chelsea, Age – 26, Position – Striker, Nationality – Ivorian)

Out-of-favour Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou is another player, whose playing style is admired by Arsene Wenger. Falling out of contention for a place in the starting line-up, thanks to the ever-present Didier Drogba, the form of Daniel Sturridge, and the reputation of Fernando Torres; Kalou has expressed his interest in leaving the West Londoners in search of more first-team action. Will be off for the African Cup of Nations in January, with Ivory Coast.

4) Matias Suarez

(Current Club – RSC Anderlecht, Age – 23, Position – Striker, Nationality – Argentine)

Signed from Argentine second division side Belgrano, Matias Suarez has made his mark in Belgium with Anderlecht, with some eye-catching performances. Despite a hard first season, he has slowly made his way into the Anderlecht starting line-up. If signed he can provide cover for Robin van Persie.

Possibility of joining – High

3) Demba Ba

(Current Club – Newcastle United, Age – 26, Position – Striker, Nationality – Senegalese)

Making his mark, first with Bundesliga high-flyers Hoffenheim, Demba Ba joined West Ham United in January 2010. He scored 7 times in 13 games, but couldn’t prevent the Hammers from getting relegated. Despite being offered an improved contract, to keep him in London, he decided to join Newcastle for a small transfer fee. At Newcastle, he took the Premier League by storm, and has 15 goals to his name already, only behind Robin van Persie. Physically imposing, the Senegalese forward is in Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations.

2) Mario Gotze

(Current Club – Borussia Dortmund, Age – 19, Position – Attacking Midfield, Nationality – German)

Dubbed the ‘German Messi’, Mario Gotze is one of Europe’s hottest football properties. Made his mark, with the young Dortmund team in the 2010-2011 season, which won the Bundesliga. With a good burst of pace, and a short frame, Gotze has all it takes to be a top player. However, reports suggest it would take atleast £30 million to price him away from the Westfallenstadion.

Possibility of joining – Below Average

1) Lukas Podolski

(Current Club – FC Cologne, Age – 26, Position – Striker, Nationality – German)

Vastly talented, Lukas Podolski burst into the scene with Cologne as a fresh-faced 18 year old in the 2003-2004 season. Despite failing to stay in the Bundesliga, Podolski decided to remain loyal to his boyhood club, and his first season back in the Bundesliga in 2005-2006 yielded 12 goals. He then moved to German giants Bayern Munich for a reported £8.5 million. He spent 3 unhappy seasons there, failing to break into the first -team often, thanks to the booming partnership of Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, and also some niggling injuries. Podolski returned to Cologne, where he had a poor first season, scoring only thrice. However, the 2011/2012 season has been a different story, with ‘Poldi’ finding the back of the net 14 times. A highly influential player at the international level, his performances at club level haven’t been very promising.
