This was not a surprise, after the excellent season RVP was expected to win both awards. This is a very special moment for Arsenal and for RVP, the last Gunner to win this was Thiery Henry when Arsenal was flying in the league and we were one of the most powerful and stylish teams to watch.
On Sunday, Robin Van Persie was presented the PFA Player of the Year. RVP beat the best players from the City and United, this award went on to highlight the impact of a player on his team and team mates. Robin has scored 27 goals this season, given his dip in form over the last 6 – 7 games this is a remarkable no.
On winning the award RVP said ”If other people are saying it, it is special, but it is even more special if your opponents are saying it.” He also added, “It is very special because you are playing against them week in week out and every single player does everything to win and in the end if they make up their minds that I’m the best player it is a big honour.”
While Robin had scored crucial goals for Arsenal, I think he got tremendous support from the team, his understanding with Song, Theo & Gervinho has been brilliant this season. Many a times, Robin had to just tap in while all the hard work was done by Theo. Robin was quick to acknowledge this ”Without them I could not have achieved it,” he said. ”For example Theo Walcott, he has given me more than 12 assists and I do really appreciate that.”
The second award, the Football Writer’s Association Footballer of the Year award was awarded to RVP on Tuesday. As per reports Robin topped the poll of journalists with a landslide victory ahead of Rooney and Paul Scholes. The last Dutchman to win this award was Dennis Bergkamp in 1998.
The key to RVP’s fabulous was to stay fit for all games, he has played an enormous amount of games this season. Robin’s captaincy has a very positive influence on the Arsenal players, I think it has allowed Vermaelen, Arteta and Song to be leaders in their area and thereby take the pressure of RVP. Also, I have read on various sites of how RVP & his wife have organized events to ensure the players are together and have a better understanding on the pitch.
Congrats to RVP and hope he extends his contracts and stays for life at Arsenal.
