Arsenal host German giants Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League. A disappointing result on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers meant that the Gunners’ chances of getting any silverware this season came crashing down as Arsenal were knocked out of England’s most prestigious cup competition. Though Arsenal are still in the UCL and the Premier League but winning them is very unlikely this season.
Arsenal go into the match as massive underdogs so this may mean a win would be in the grasps of their hands. A shock loss against Blackburn showed that cup competitions can be totally unpredictable and an Arsenal win against FC Bayern can’t be ruled out.
Arsène Wenger rested many big guns against Blackburn including Sagna, Podolski and Mertesacker. A good strong Arsenal side would be put against the German side but the only issue would be the left back position where the new signing Nacho Monreal was playing. Since the Spanish international is cup tied and Gibbs is injured, the next person for the spot is most likely going to be Vermaelen. The Arsenal skipper has been deputised at left back before and playing there shouldn’t be a major problem for him.
This is how I expect the Gunners to line up in their usual 4-2-3-1:
B. Sagna P. Mertesacker L. Koscielny T. Vermaelen
M. Arteta J. Wilshere
T. Walcott S. Cazorla L. Podolski
Most Arsenal fans won’t be expecting a win against Bayern Munich considering they have just conceded 7 times in the Bundesliga so far and have lost just once. A win may heal the wounds of the embarrassing exit from the cup and would put Arsenal in a strong position for the second leg where the sides meat at the Allianz Arena.
