Arsenal started their campaign with a frustrating draw against a very resistant Sunderland side. Arsenal created little and scored none. The best chance fell to Olivier Giroud but he couldn’t convert it with his weak foot. Here are the player ratings for the match:
Szczesny 6- He had just a couple of saves to make in the whole match otherwise he was just a spectator really. The most interesting fact was that he just touched the ball four times during the whole match.
Gibbs 6.5- He had a good game down the left side, attacking and defending. He will prove himself this season if he remains fit. He has the quality to become a world class defender.
Vermaelen 7- He had rather little to do. Blocked a shot or two and his own shot was blocked when he was in the Sunderland half.
Mertesacker 6- Was a bit shaky at the start when he played James McClean on which nearly resulted in a goal were it not for Wojciech Szczesny in goal.
Jenkinson 6.5- He had a good game whole match and wasn’t troubled at all by McClean. His crossing has certainly improved and he was good when he attacked down that right hand side.
Arteta 7- The Spaniard was rather quite the whole game and played a disciplined role in midfield. Arteta was mainly in the middle of the pitch and started the Arsenal attacks.
Diaby 6.5- Was caught up in possession a few times but was alright. The French international even tested the goalkeeper from long range which was saved.
Cazorla 8.5- He was absolutely brilliant in the middle of the park and was in the heart of every Arsenal attack. He threaded through many passes and tested the Black Cats’ goalkeeper a couple of times and his two shots went just wide. He is world class and with his performances in the last couple of matches has made him a fan favourite.
Walcott 6.5- He couldn’t use his pace much against a compact Sunderland but had a few successful dribbles in the second half. Wasn’t much in the match.
Gervinho 8- He was the most lively person on the pitch on Saturday. He was brilliant attacking and defending. There was one moment when Gibbs was caught upfront and the Ivory Coast international ran 70 yards to dispossess the opponent and was applauded by the fans and Wenger. He was giving all sorts of problems to the Sunderland defence but was unlucky not to score.
Podolski 6.5- Wasn’t a great debut for him but the German international would hopefully be opening his goalscoring account for Arsenal next weekend. He showed great signs but didn’t score.
The season just kicked off and hopefully in coming weeks, the team will gel and score loads and show that they weren’t a one man team. Arsenal fans have high hopes for the season and the gunners will look to challenge for the title as both of the Manchester clubs looked a bit shaky in the opening game of the season.
