Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign on Saturday against Sunderland at the Emirates. New signings Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla would get a taste of the England’s top division. After bitter news of Van Persie departing to rivals Manchester United, Arsenal fans would be hoping for a good result against Sunderland to cheer them up. Every football fan has been waiting for this Saturday for a long time now and the season would finally kick off.
Last time Arsenal played against the black cats was at the stadium side where the gunners won 2-1 after Thierry Henry’s injury time winner send Arsenal fourth in the Premier League. It was one of those fairy tale finishes for the gunners. James McLean had opened the scoring after Per Mertesacker twisted his ankle and got injured. He took advantage of the situation and slotted it past Szczesny. Aaron Ramsey equalised twenty minutes from time coming off the bench and Henry got the headlines after good work from Arshavin.
Predicted line up:
In goal would be Polish international Wojciech Szczesny who got the number 1 this season. Despite Wenger opting to play Mannone and Fabianski mostly in preseason, there is no doubt that the young Pole would be between the sticks. The 6 foot 5 was marvellous in goal last season for the Gunners and managed to keep about 10-12 clean sheets in the league last season.
The back line would see Vermaelen (most likely to be the captain) partnering Koscielny in the middle of the defence with Jenkison and Gibbs taking the right and left fullback positions respectively. The Belgian and the Frenchman formed a good partnership last season.
In the middle of the park, Song and Arteta would play as centre midfielders with Cazorla ahead of them in centre attack mid. The latest signing, was brilliant against Cologne and may as well fill the void left by Fabregas in midfield. He has the creativity that Arsenal lacked last season and would definitely prove himself in the Premier League. If the rumours are to be true, Alex Song would have joined Spanish giants Barcelona and Chamberlain would be the one playing in midfield alongside Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal’s new forwards would feature in this starting eleven with Olivier Giroud spearheading the attack, Podolski on the left wing and Theo Walcott on the right. The trio have impressed during preseason and they would want to build on it.
It should be a win on the first day or the things might just go worse after the Dutchman’s departure. Three points would do good for Wenger and the new signings would want to show off their skills on Saturday. I predict a easy and comfortable 3-0 win for the Gunners.
Just can’t wait for Saturday!
