Olympiakos vs Arsenal – Another chance for the Youth

Venue: Karaiskakis Stadium
Date: Wenesday 7th December
Kick-off: 01:15 IST

We had a wonderful win on Saturday in the league against Wigan, and having already secured our entry to the knock-out it was no surprise when the Manager announced the squad to play the Greeks for the next Champions League draw. Its a very youthful side and with already 4 points above Marseille we can take it easy.

Squad travelling to Greece: Fabianski, Mannone, Park, Chamakh, Benayoun, Coquelin, Frimpong, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arshavin, Squillaci, Djourou, Vermaelen, Santos, Rosicky, Ozyakup, Yennaris, Eastmond, Miquel.

Most of the first team players wont be traveling for this tie and they truly deserve the rest because the tight schedule and the number of games they had to play from November till the end of December.Vermaelen and Santos are the only first team players traveling in that flight, maybe just for back up. It is good to see Rosicky return after a thigh problem that kept him out of the last few games. Ideally Wenger would be playing the same team that played Manchester City except for Koscielny. So the only possible change would be Yennaris in the squad as right back and Djourou moving to the center of defense along with Squillaci.

One glance at the Arsenal squad will have most neutrals scratching their heads at some of the names and the 18 who are in contention for a place at the Karaiskakis Stadium even goes beyond the normal levels of experimentation. Indeed, Arsenal’s administrative staff will have had a busy week making sure each squad member wasn’t still on their mum’s passport. Not many teams would throw in so many untested players onto a stage as big as the Champions League, but Wenger’s brood are definitely worth taking a look at and maybe its got to do with the the match against Man City where the young guns did an amazing job.

Wenger is clearly mindful of his team’s forthcoming games with Everton and then the big one with Manchester City which are both potential stumbling blocks to their aspirations of keeping the pace with breaking into the top four. So he needs to make sure that he rotates the team players well. It will definitely be a great test for the young team and the Karaiskakis will not be a easy place to play at but its the experience that would make these wonderful lads better and I am pretty sure that the Manager would be hoping for another match like the Carling cup one.

Our Squad prediction for the match:

Sadly there is no live telecast tomorrow so we need to be happy with some streaming links and its never been good for me. But the match is also aired on Arsenal Player and if you are a member that’s one place to be and maybe you can take a one day pass if you don’t want to shell out too much. Not predicting any score but would be happy if they can come up with a performance like the one against Manchester City in Carling cup.

But we love to hear your predictions and thoughts on the game and do let us know…
